About Ashburton
Ashburton is the hub of this district and offers high-quality shopping facilities, cafes, restaurants, craft shops, heritage museums and a nationally recognised art gallery.
Lake Hood is situated just five minutes from Ashburton and boasts seven kilometres of shoreline, a water ski tournament park and international-class rowing course.
Rakaia is a rural community 50 kilometres south of Christchurch, with a 1.8-kilometre bridge spanning the Rakaia River, one of the world's best examples of a braided river and offering some of the best fishing in the country. Rakaia offers a range of activities including salmon fishing, jet boating, golf, garden visits, craft markets and farm tours.
The Methven and Mt Hutt regions offer walks, fishing, hunting, skiing and snowboarding, bungy jumping, jet boating, hot air ballooning and golf. Each year, thousands of visitors from around the world base themselves at Methven Mt Hutt Village, which is at the heart of seven ski areas and over 1000 square kilometres of the best heli-skiing terrain in New Zealand.
The Ashburton District can offer you a memorable Canterbury experience:
- Try the world-famous trout and salmon fishing on the braided Rakaia river
- Go skiing at Mount Hutt in winter
- From Methven you can go hot air ballooning, jet boating, parachuting and mountain biking
- Walk to historical sites, deep river canyons and native beech forest in the Mount Hutt Forest area and along the Mount Somers Sub Alpine Walkway
- Visit Ashford Craft Village in Ashburton for local and New Zealand-made arts and crafts
- Travel to Selwyn and visit Lake Coleridge. This deep blue high country lake and adjacent village are renowned for their fishing, water skiing and scenery
